Supporters urged to turn Galway into sea of maroon and white

The official Galway GAA supporters club has urged hurling-mad fans to turn the city and county maroon.

The maroon army will march in unprecedented numbers to Croke Park Sunday week for the All-Ireland senior and minor hurling finals in search of an historic double – and already there’s talk of a ticket-drought!

Tribesmen GAA opened a pop-up shop in the city on Sunday but the one thing it doesn’t stock is what’s most in demand – and that’s tickets to the final!

“Within ten minutes of the shop opening last Sunday we’d people in looking for tickets,” the spokesperson explained.

“We don’t have any and we won’t be selling any. There are no tickets for sale at Pearse Stadium either. Season ticket holders will be contacted through the GAA – and this just shows the value of buying a season ticket. Everyone else will have to get their tickets through the clubs.

“We expect demand for tickets to be even greater than in 2012. You saw yourself the support we had at the semi-final against Tipperary – it was savage the support; just colossal and everyone who was there will want to be at the final and then you’ll have more again on top of that. The demand will be huge.”

Meanwhile, Tribesmen GAA has appealed to towns and villages in the county to follow the lead of businesses and residents in the city, who have already pulled out all the stops in putting up flags and bunting.

In a rallying cry to GAA heartlands across Galway, a spokesperson for Tribesmen GAA said: “We’re looking for people to splash the colour in the lead up to the All-Ireland final. In fairness, look around the city and the Latin Quarter and there is already a lot of colour. There is maroon all over Quay Street, High Street, Cross Street and Mainguard Street. The buzz in the city is unreal in fairness.

“We’re looking for businesses and homes in villages and towns across the county to do the same. Oughterard already has some colour and we know the likes of Kinvara and Gort will and we’re just looking for as much as possible in every town and village across the county.”

Tribesmen GAA has a prize for the best and most colourful display of maroon, examples of which will be posted on the organisation’s social media accounts.

In the lead up to Sunday, September 6, the supporters club has opened a shop at Fahy Travel on Bridge Street, where supporters can buy all everything from t-shirts and hoodies to flags and bunting, as well as jester hats, scarves, headbands, baseball caps and mugs. All profits from the shop go directly towards the preparations of the hurling team. It is open from 3pm to 7pm Monday to Friday; from 10am to 7pm on Saturday and 12 noon to 6pm Sunday.
