Supporters of Lisbrook asylum centre in the city are vowing to keep the pressure on the Government to stop hundreds of residents being moved elsewhere.

A rally in support of the residents will go ahead as planned in Eyre Square this Saturday.

It was announced earlier today that the Justice Minister is to hold off on all transfers from the centre until a consideration process being conducted by the department is complete.

The centre was set to wind down with up to 270 residents moved to other centres nationwide by the end of the month and jobs losses for 25 staff.

Galway Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh says the Government will be made aware of the large scale support for the residents.
