Supporters join debate over Galway GAA’s finances

The county’s official hurling and Gaelic football supporters club has broken its silence over the ongoing financial controversies engulfing Galway GAA.

Tribesmen GAA Supporters’ Club issued a statement on Tuesday to clarify its position on its fundraising activities for Galway GAA – which amounted to over €1.1 million over three years.

The supporters’ club statement was signed by chairman Brendan O’Hagan on behalf of its committee. It was issued ahead of next Monday’s annual County Galway GAA Convention, where Mick Culhane will challenge the incumbent, Pat Kearney for the position of County GAA Chairman.

The statement – clarifying that the supporters’ club’s ethos was to raise money solely for the purposes of preparing Galway GAA teams – comes hot on the heels of the county senior teams’ main sponsors issuing a statement about the finances of Galway GAA.

Supermac’s went public in September and October of this year with two statements outlining how much it had given in sponsorship to Galway GAA, and questioning how it had been spent.

That public intervention came after a leaked Mazar’s Report carried out in 2018 highlighted “governance deficiencies” in Galway GAA.

In this latest twist, Tribesmen GAA Supporters’ Club said its members initially had made a conscious decision not to comment on Galway GAA’s finances.

“However, over the past few weeks, some of our members have been questioned about the credibility of our own finances, and our links with the Galway GAA County Board,” it said.
