Sunny spell set to extend into Bank Holiday weekend
WE’RE set to swelter away in the West for the June Bank Holiday weekend with temperatures predicted to approach the mid-20s in places . . . but from Sunday on, there’s an increasing risk of some serious thunderstorms.
Crowded beaches and lakesides, first crops of silage and hay being cut, as well as a ‘run’ on sun tan lotion characterised the last week of May – one of our best weather spells in the past year.
Temperatures across Galway have reached 23° degrees Celsius in many places over recent days and according to Met Éireann they could touch the mid-20s over the weekend in more inland areas.
The glorious sunshine though has come with a few health warnings for motorists, sun worshippers and the thousands of people who are set to take to the water over the weekend.
Sun bathers have been warned to either cover up or to use a ‘high number’ sun protection cream while the Irish Water Safety Association have warned of an increased drowning risk during the current mini-heatwave.
Motorists and farmers have also been advised on an increased safety risk as the silage season gets into full swing with increased machinery activity on the roads and on farms.
