STUDY REVEALS LEVEL OF SUDDEN HEART DEATHS IN THE WEST

There were over 200 cases of sudden cardiac death in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in 2005.

The figures are contained in a study, undertaken by Dr. Robert Byrne and Dr. Jim Crowley, with colleagues from the Departments of cardiology and pathology at NUIGalway.

The research, published in the ‘European Heart Journal’, examined cases of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac death in the West.

Data was collected from both emergency department resuscitation records and autopsy reports revealing there were 212 SCDs in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon

It also reveals that 70 percent of sudden cardiac deaths in 2005 occured in the home.
