Students are to gather in protest this morning [Oct 19] as Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn is set to attend a conference in the city.

The demonstration is led by Free Education for Everyone Galway over fee hikes and fears of further grant cuts.

Students are planning to assemble in Eyre Square in the next half an hour [8.30AM] before making their way to the Radisson Hotel where Minister Quinn is addressing the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals.

He’s to give a talk on leadership for school improvement.

Frank Doherty is spokesperson for the FEE group and says students cannot take any more pain.

He says he’ll be calling on Ruairi Quinn to reassess government priorities.
