STUDENT UNIONS WELCOME NO CHANGES TO GRANT ASSESSMENTS
Date Published: 10-Aug-2012
There are to be no changes to the means test terms for student grants for the coming year.
The clarification has been announced by the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn following queries made by his Junior Minister Ciaran Cannon of Galway East
There had been uproar in Galway this week with increasing speculation that farmland and business premises were to be targetted in a new means test for student grants.
Junior Minister Cannon told Galway Bay fm news while a study is being made into the assessment procedures, the findings are not due until the Autumn so there will be no changes this year.
Connor Stitt, who’s Vice President Education Officer at NUI Galway’s Student Union, says it’s a good result for farming families.
And President of GMIT’s Student Union Joe O’Connor says it was the right decision not to change the means test terms for student grants.
