Strange start to Summer season

THE ‘hay weather’ might have arrived this week but up until now it has been a strange early Summer mix of cloud, lower than average temperatures but not a lot of rainfall.

Up until this week, temperatures and sunshine amounts have been desperately disappointing while cold soils also hampered growth through April and May.

Rainfall for June now looks like coming in around the one-inch mark – well below the average – with growth falling back over recent days due to soil moisture deficits.

Abbeyknockmoy weather recorder, Brendan Geraghty, said that total rainfall for June looked like coming in under the 1.25-inch mark following on from 3.81 inches in June and just 1.05 inches in April.

“Overall, it has been quite a dry three-month period but it has been quite dull while the temperatures were also disappointing.

“While growth did take off for a couple of weeks around the middle of the month, it has fallen back again as soils dry out,” said Brendan Geraghty.

He also said that the dry period was being reflected in river and stream levels all across the region where many of them could be walked across.

“The bog seems to have been the big winner with the weather and the dry conditions. Turfs and the banks have really dried out during the month of June,” said Brendan Geraghty.
