One of the county’s most successful drama groups will bring their latest production to the Taibhdhearc this Saturday.

The popular Glenamaddy Players will perform Stolen Child at the venue on Saturday at 8pm. The play is by Yvonne Quinn and Bairbre Ní Chaoimh.

It tells the story of a young Dublin woman’s journey to find her natural mother and is timely in that it explores life in industrial schools.

The woman enlists the help of a private detective who has a strange sense of humour. He is also a heavy drinker.

Parallel to this woman’s quest is the heart-breaking story of her mother’s upbringing by nuns in a 1940s Industrial school and the harsh facts surrounding the enforced adoption of her baby.

The play was first staged in 2002 and was one of the first to explore the secret history of Ireland’s industrial schools.

There is a long tradition of drama in Glenamaddy, dating back to the 1950s while The Glenamaddy Players are in existence for over forty years. They compete in the drama festival circuit every year, having had very successful runs with plays such as The Playboy of the Western World, Moment and Agnes of God. They believe that their production of Stolen Child is one of their most challenging to date.

They will be performing in mid-February in Glenamaddy before embarking on the drama festival circuit.
