Still no sign of new burial ground as cemetery runs out of space

There are renewed calls for more urgency on behalf of Galway City Council in identifying land for a new burial ground on the east side of the city.

Bohermore Cemetery has no more double plots remaining, and only a handful of single plots left, leading to calls for the local authority to step up its efforts to source a new graveyard.

Burials will continue in purchased plots at Bohermore for years to come but those who pass away in the coming years without having purchased such plots will need to be buried in Rahoon Cemetery.

Galway City Councillor, Ollie Crowe said the Council needs to take action urgently to identify land for a new burial ground.

“This issue has been identified as a priority going back a number of years. Consultants were appointed last year to identify suitable new premises and we have heard nothing since.

“It is a constant concern raised by residents in Bohermore and the entire east side of the city. It is simply ridiculous to suggest to families who wish to visit the grave of their loved ones that they will need to travel to the other side of the city in order to do so,” fumed Cllr Crowe.

The Fianna Fáil politician will be looking for an update on the matter when the Council resumes its meetings in mid September.
