Still hale and hearty: ex-publican Bridget enjoys her 100th

A well known city publican celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend surrounded by her extended family and friends.

Bridget Fox was the proprietor of Fox’s Bar in Forster Street and only retired at the age of 80 but she has experienced some great health in the meantime.

A deeply religious woman, Bridget was surrounded by her large family as she celebrated a momentous occasion in the Ardilaun Hotel.

Mass was celebrated in the hotel by close family friend Fr Tadhg Quinn as some of her children travelled from long distances to join in the festivities.

Her daughter Maura along with her husband Frank Peters and their three children Ultan, Fergus and Muireann travelled from Edmonton in Canada especially for the event.

Mrs Fox, who is a mother of eight children, grandmother to 29 and who has 33 great-grandchildren, is still in good health.

She gets around, listens to the radio and says that she is an avid reader of both the Sentinel and Connacht Tribune each week.

Bridget, who retired as proprietor of Fox’s Bar in Forster Street at the age of 80, has been a widow for 60 years since her husband Patrick died following a road accident in 1953 on the Tuam Road close to the city.
