Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Supreme Court has ordered the State to pay the entire costs of a Galway man’s unsuccessful action to have his trial heard by a bilingual jury.
Peadar Ó Maicín from Rosmuc who now lives in Salthill, undertook the Supreme Court appeal for his trial on assault charges.
He lost the appeal by a four to one majority last February.
Peadar Ó Maicín wanted the jury in his trial to be selected from a specially designated area of south Connemara where most of the population speaks Irish.
The High Court rejected the request and Ó Maicín took the case to the Supreme Court which also ruled against the bilingual jury, according to today’s Irish Times
However because of the constitutional issues raised by the appeal, the Supreme Court has granted an application by legal representatives for Peader Ó Maicín that costs be covered by the State.
