It’s strange to be previewing a county senior Gaelic football final that doesn’t involve Corofin but, this Sunday, it will be the men of Mountbellew/Moylough and Moycullen that deservedly take centre stage in a keenly anticipated decider at Pearse Stadium (4pm).

Both have impressive credentials entering the biggest day in club football in Galway, with Moycullen undefeated in 2020 and Mountbellew/Moylough, so often the bridesmaids in recent campaigns, having dethroned reigning champions Corofin at the penultimate stage.

No doubt, last Sunday’s semi-final victory was a sweet one for Mountbellew/Moylough, given they have suffered more than most at the hands of Corofin over the last decade or so, losing four finals to them since 2009. Mountbellew/Moylough took Corofin to a replay in two of those deciders – 2009 and 2018 – but, on each occasion, they fell short.

In all, Mountbellew/Moylough have appeared in 15 finals since 1890, winning just four of them: 1964, 1965, 1974 and 1986. On the latter occasion, they defeated Milltown, 1-5 to 0-4, after a replay, with Mountbellew/Moylough captained by current manager and Galway legend Val Daly. It may be a good omen.

In any event, after an indifferent group campaign – in which Mountbellew/Moylough limped over Annaghdown, stuttered by Micheàl Breathnach and were thumped by Moycullen – Daly has got a tune out of his charges at just the right time, the knockout stages.

They made light of a seasoned Killannin outfit, in the quarter-final, dismissing them on a 2-13 to 1-5 scoreline. Eoin Finnerty and Patrick Kelly netted the goals in that game, with Barry McHugh chipping in with five points, two from frees and one from a mark.
