Staff to be laid off at Galway Airport on Friday
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Up to 5 staff will be laid off from Galway Airport on Friday now that the site has been sold by Galway Chamber
The City and County Councils have purchased the airport in Carnmore in a joint venture costing 1.1 million euro.
They are not saying at this point what their plans for the 116 acre facility are.
The news was confirmed at a special meeting of the City Council last evening.
Mayor of Galway, Padraig Conneely says the aviation licence for the airport will cease next week.
Mayor of County Galway Liam Carroll says they will enter discussions with the Flying Club and Parachute Club which are tenants at the airport.
City Councillor Catherine Connolly feels is a good decision to retain airport site in public ownership, although it’s disappointing that Galway will no longer have an airport.
