STAFF AT ATHENRY ALZHEIMERS CENTRE DEMAND REVERSAL OF PAY CUT
Date Published: 14-Dec-2011
20 care assistants at the Western Alzheimers centre in Athenry are calling for an immediate reversal of pay cuts.
It follows the introduction of a four percent cut to their hourly rate last week [Dec 5] reducing the rate to 12 euro.
The cut represents a saving of 28 thousand euro and is the second in a series of cuts this year.
The Western Alzheimers regional branch is based in Athenry where the 22 bed facility also provides three day care places as relief for local families.
SIPTU Health Services Organiser Paul Hardy says savings could be looked at elsewhere such as in the area of management consultants.
The CEO of Western Alzheimers John Grant argues that the cuts, which were taken across the board, were the only way to stop job losses.
HIQA is also insisting that the Athenry site be upgraded to the tune of 100 thousand euro which the organisation must now find the funds for.
John Grant says the organisation had no other option but to cut wages.
