St Thomas’ 22-match unbeaten run in the county came to a shuddering halt in Athenry on Saturday when they suffered a 15-point trimming at the hands of Turloughmore.

That leaves an intriguing battle in the group to see which two sides claim the automatic quarter-finals spots, and which two will head into the preliminary quarter-finals: St Thomas’ Turloughmore and Clarinbridge are all on six points, with Sarsfields on five points ahead of next week’s final round of games, which sees St Thomas’ take on Clarinbridge in a repeat of last year’s final, while Sarsfields will face Turloughmore.

Loughrea are straight into the quarter-finals after making it four wins from four in Senior A Group 2 with an eight-point win over Cappataggle. They will be joined in the quarter-finals by either Tommy Larkins or Cappataggle, who will meet next weekend; with the losers of that game being joined in the preliminary quarter-finals by either Gort or Craughwell, who also meet on the final weekend of group games.

Portumna and Moycullen both look like being promoted to Senior A for next season after both made it four wins from four in their Senior B group games at the weekend. As well as promotion, the group winners will also qualify for the preliminary quarter-finals.

Moycullen, last year’s intermediate champions, squeaked past Kilnadeema/Leitrim in Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening to see them top of the group, but they could still be pipped for top spot on the final day if they are beaten by Oranmore/Maree, who are two points behind them, but will edge top spot by virtue of wining the head-to-head between the sides.
