St Thomas’ to the rescue with offer to face Covid-hit Gort in county semi-final

St Thomas’ senior hurling squad before defeating Turloughmore in th 2020 county final. The club broke the impasse over this year's semi-final by offering to play Gort this weekend.

THE prospect of a post-Christmas Galway senior hurling final has been averted . . . thanks to an unexpected intervention from county champions St Thomas’.

Weeks of boardroom disputes were looming after Gort refused to participate in the Galway semi-final for a second time due to the impact of Covid on their camp.

Originally, their South Galway semis derby was to have gone ahead on Sunday, November 7, but Gort successfully sought a postponement after a number of their players were caught up in a Covid outbreak.

The match was subsequently rearranged for last Sunday at the same venue, but Gort dug their heels in again, warning that they were still not in a position to fulfill the fixture.

Galway GAA officials examined the evidence presented by the Gort club and ruled that there was no cause for the semi-final being postponed for a second time.

On the back of that decision and with Gort refusing to play, it meant the Mattie Murphy managed outfit faced being thrown out of the championship and being hit by hefty fines.

That scenario would automatically have been appealed by Gort to the Connacht Council, with the prospect of the Central Appeals Hearing Committee and the DRA also becoming involved down the road.
