St Michael’s set sights on seventh minor football title
By Mark Walsh
SEVENTH heaven is what awaits St Michael’s if they can manage to get over the significant hurdle of Claregalway in Saturday’s County Minor A football final at Pearse Stadium (throw-in 4:30pm).
County titles in minor have entered the St Michael’s clubhouse in Westside on six previous occasions. Formed in 1956, triumphs at the grade soon followed, three-in-a-row in fact, in 1958, ’59 and ’60. Another came in 1969, before a wait the same length of the Galway footballers, 32 years, until 2001. The last arrived in 2004. Claregalway’s first, and so far, only success came on October 15 of 2017.
St Michael’s reached this decider on the back of a one-point victory over Salthill-Knocknacarra. That deadly number seven was in the equation again, as it stopped Salthill’s bid for a seventh successive West Board A title on the spin. Never a bad boast when local rivalry is to be attended to.
Prior to that final at Pearse Stadium, St Michael’s had defeated Salthill-Knocknacarra in the group stages by two points, as well as Oranmore-Maree. Topping their group allowed them to avoid a play-off, and they got the better of Barna in the last four.
