Date Published: 17-Aug-2007

It’s thought a squall of water was the reason one of the best known Galway Hookers sank at the Cruinniú na mBád Festival in Kinvara last weekend [12/8]

Organisers of the event managed to raise the 100 year old “Morning Star” on Monday after it went down during a race on Sunday evening, and it was not damaged

All 11 people on board the boat were wearing life jackets at the time and were rescued by Festival crews within minutes of the boat going under

Dr. Michael Brogan, Chairperson of the Cruinniú na mBád Festival says they can’t be entirely sure, but organisers believe a squall and the shipping of wter caused the Hooker to sink

Dr. Brogan says that improved safety measures will be implemented for next year’s Cruinniú Festival, but that they were quite happy with the resuce effort last Sunday
