Spotify stars 99 Souls bring house mash-up to the city

Having clocked up 60 million plays on Spotify for their track The Girl Is Mine, 99 Souls come to The Loft on Bridge Street in Galway City on Friday September 16.

A mash-up of Destiny’s Child Girl and Brandy’s The Boy Is Mine, the British house duo who go under the names Soul and Jo really scored a monster hit here.

In order to make the track happen, Soul had to hop on a plane to California straight after a gig in Cornwall. Because of an issue with the master recording, Brandy had to re-record her vocal. At the time, the R&B superstar was performing in the musical Chicago on Broadway, and flew from New York to LA for a Sunday session.

So, a lot of air miles and organising for one track, but it’s arguably been worth it, with 99 Souls now massively in-demand. This summer alone, they’ve played festivals like Creamfields, Lovebox, Bestival, as well as a string of Ibiza dates. They’re currently working on their debut album, and cite Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Kanye West as some of their biggest song-writing inspirations.

“We both love acoustic music – and we want to connect with people,” Soul says. On the record, they plan to “combine live instrumentation and unforgettable guest vocalists with introspective lyrics and social commentary.”

One for fans of club music and those keen to dust off their dancing shoes.
