January – Sporting fixtures fall victim to the cold snap
SPORTING fixtures right across the board fell victim to the prolonged cold spells, with Connacht’s Magners League clash against Newport Gwent Dragons one of those to be called off. When rugby action did resume, the Westerners recorded a 20-10 victory over French outfit Montpellier to advance to the last eight of the Amlin Challenge Cup. This victory was followed up by a facile 66-0 win over Olympus Madrid as Connacht remained Europe’s only unbeaten side heading into the knockout stages.
Kiltormer and Galway GAA lost one of its favourite sons when President of Galway Hurling Board, Laurence Larkin sadly passed away. Laurence was described as one of the GAA’s greatest volunteers.
On the field of play, the Galway senior footballers recorded wins over Sligo, Leitrim and GMIT in the FBD League, while Galway’s senior hurlers opened their Walsh Cup campaign with victory over Laois.
Galway United unveiled former Bohemians and Dundalk boss Sean Connor as manager, while Mervue United – who parted ways with their manager Johnny Glynn – and Salthill Devon both had their League of Ireland applications approved for the 2010 season.
Elsewhere, former Mervue United youngster, Greg Cunningham made his debut for Manchester City in their FA Cup clash with Scunthorpe.
