Some of the leading names in local, national and international theatre will appear onstage at the city’s Town Hall and Black Box Theatres between now and September as part of the Town Hall Theatre Summer-Autumn programme.

The Abbey Theatre will be bringing Brian Friel’s classic Translations, its latest show and a co-production with Belfast’s Lyric Theatre in late August, while Footsbarn Travelling Theatre, with singer Glen Hansard and musician Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, will be at the Black Box Theatre at the same time with their collaboration, The Crock of Gold.

Companies that are due to visit next month include Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre as well as the Gate and Theatre Lovett, as well as Galway’s own Decadent, all of whom are featuring in the Arts Festival.

In September, Blue Teapot Theatre, the company which works with actors who have intellectual disabilities, will be at the Black Box with Into the Dark Woods. Written by company member Charlene Kelly and a co-production with the Abbey Theatre, this was a Galway 2020 commission.

Christian O’Reilly’s play, No Magic Pill, based on the life of the late Martin Naughton from An Spidéal will also be presented in that space in September.  Martin Naughton’s concerted campaign for independence for disabled people in Ireland brought about radical change, as will be explored in this piece, which is directed by Raymond Keane.

The Town Hall will also host film, dance, music, comedy and even magic in its upcoming season.

Details of shows for the next three months have been published in its new brochure, its first season brochure since March 2020.
