7 Galway beaches are being presented with blue flags for water quality at a ceremony in Dun Laoghaire.

One beach in Galway, Céibh an Spidéal has lost its blue flag this year.

However, Silverstand and Salthill in the city and Loughrea lake, Trá Mór – Coill Rua, Trá an Dóilín, Cill Mhuirbhigh – Inis Mór and Traught in the county have all retained their flags.

It’s one of 13 beaches across the country that have lost their blue flags because of a new EU bathing water directive which has higher standards.

Patricia Oliver from An Taisce says that although the beach in Spiddal failed this year, it still scored well.
