Speed cameras target almost 60 Galway blackspots
Date Published: 17-Nov-2010
Almost 60 locations across Galway city and county are to be targeted by mobile speed vans in an effort to detect motorists who exceed the speed limit.
It is part of an initiative by the Government to reduce the number of fatalities on the county’s roads and came into effect on Monday night last.
A private company has won the contract to place highly visible speed vans at locations that have been identified as accident blackspots.
It is understood that two speed vans will be deployed to County Galway and will operate at several designated locations during the course of each day.
And a warning has been issued to motorists that they will face prosecution if they are found speeding at these locations.
It is not a covert operation as the locations of the speed vans have been disclosed by the Gardai and they will carry similar markings to the Garda traffic corps patrol cars.
A total of 57 stretches of road in County Galway have been identified are areas where speeding is a problem and the mobile speed cameras will be located in these areas on a random basis.
