Special screening of new documentary on Orson Welles
Filmmaker Mark Cousins will return to Galway on Thursday, August 23, for the screening of his new documentary, The Eyes of Orson Welles. The screening is being hosted by Galway City of Film and will take place at 7pm on August 23 in An Pálás Cinema, followed by a Q&A with Mark, hosted by Declan McGrath.
The Eyes of Orson Welles, which was executive-produced by Michael Moore, brings to life the passions, politics and power of this brilliant 20th-century showman and explores how Welles’ genius continues to resonate in this age of Trump, more than three decades after the film-maker’s death.
Welles’s films as an actor and director include Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil and Chimes at Midnight. These are among the greatest and most innovative ever made, earning him a place as one of the most famous cultural figures of the past century. But one aspect of his life and work has never been discussed; Welles loved art and the child prodigy trained first as an artist. However, a solo drawing trip he took to Ireland when he was a teenager led him in a whole new direction. After he talked his way onto the stage at Dublin’s Gate Theatre, instant stardom followed. But he continued to draw and paint throughout his life, something that’s captured in this documentary, parts of which were filmed in Galway city and Connemara, retracing Welles’ solo trip here as a youngster.
His daughter Beatrice granted Mark Cousins access to this treasure trove of imagery, to make a film about what he found – the first time such access was granted.
