Spate of drugs busts ‘only a drop in the ocean’

DRUGS and cash with a total value of well over €400,000 have been seized by Gardaí in Galway in the first three weeks of January but Galway’s most senior Garda has warned that the finds – while significant – were ‘still only a drop in the ocean’ in terms of overall drugs usage.

Chief Superintendent, Tom Curley, told the Connacht Tribune that while the drugs – and the drugs-related cash finds – were very positive developments for the Garda teams involved, the overall scale of the problem could not be under-estimated.

“While the finds of recent weeks are significant, we believe that they still only represent a small fraction of the illegal drugs that are being trafficked and used in Galway – and indeed all across the country,” said Tom Curley.

His comments come in the wake of a third significant drugs haul last weekend in Galway city when €50,000 worth of cocaine was found at a house on Sunday last, January 19, after an intelligence led Garda search operation.

That discovery followed the stopping of a car on the M6 motorway close to Loughrea at 7.40pm last Sunday evening – the vehicle was searched and €17,580 in cash was seized by Gardaí.
