‘Spaceship for Sale’ sign turns heads among commuters

A number of strange posters which popped up on lamp-posts throughout Galway this week have caused quite a distraction among city road users.

Mystery surrounds the origin of the posters which advertise a 2010 “ex-troika surplus” spaceship for sale, which has mileage of 120,000,000,000 and is taxed until 2057.

The advertisements could be considered part of an elaborate hoax or prank, but the posters are of a professional quality and have turned the heads of city commuters across the city from Knocknacarra to Parkmore.

A mobile number is given out at the bottom of the posters, although contact person ‘Stephen’ was unavailable to comment about his “genuine reasons for selling” when telephoned on a number of occasions yesterday.

Instead, a recorded voice tells callers to leave a message if they are interested in purchasing the four year-old spaceship.

Of course, Tuesday was April Fool’s Day – but some of the posters were put onto lamp-posts on Monday and many of them were still in place yesterday afternoon.

The new additions to Galway’s streetscape are already causing bemusement among local authority staff who were not expecting to have to deal with spaceship posters as they brace themselves for next month’s local and European elections.
