Two Galway Clinic consultant urologists are embracing a surgical procedure which uses a futuristic robotic arm invented by NASA to spearhead the fight against early prostate cancer.

An Cheathru Rua native Paddy O’Malley and Dubliner David Bouchier Hayes are the two surgeons who have introduced this “cutting edge” procedure, known as the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, to Ireland.

Costing €2.2 million, this state-of-the-art surgical unit was originally developed by NASA for operating remotely on astronauts in space, before the US Department of Defence embraced the concept in treating its soldiers on the battlefield.
