Songwriter to the stars, Don Mescall, for city show

Singer, songwriter and producer Don Mescall will play Monroe’s Live on Tuesday, August 25.

Hailing from Limerick, Mescall now divides his time between London, Dublin and Nashville, writing songs for and working with a host of international stars.

His works have been recorded by The Backstreet Boys, Geri Halliwell, Ronan Keating and American country superstars Rascal Flatts, among others. That last band mightn’t ring too many bells this side of the Atlantic, but have sold almost 25 million albums to date.

Working in Nashville means Mescall gets to compete with and collaborate with songwriters who are pitching their work to superstars. It’s a competitive environment but if a writer gets picked up by an act like Rascall Flatts, it pays off. The band picked up Mescall’s song Secret Smile in 2007, and it got him noticed. He’s also worked with Sharon Corr on her solo debut and co-wrote Angels in Chains with former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell – a song which pays tribute to her friend George Michael.

Three of his compositions were featured on Boyzone’s 20th anniversary album so, overall, it’s fair to say when a Mescall song catches the right ears, it gets a fair bit of exposure.

A successful performer in his own right, Don Mescall will have songs and stories galore when he comes to town.

■ Doors 8pm, tickets €10.
