Galway Bay fm newsroom – Marty Walsh, whose parents came from Connemara, has gone through to the election proper for Mayor of Boston on the 5th of November.

Walsh, a State Representative in the Massachusetts Parliament, came out on top in yesterday’s Primary election in Boston.

There were 12 candidates in the running and the top two now go forward to the final contest in 6 weeks time.

It has been a big night for Connemara people in Boston and Massachusetts.

Marty Walsh, whose mother comes from Ros Muc and whose late father came from Carna, led the field of 12 candidates in the primary election.

The field of twelve candidates had been campaigning hard for the past 4 months and yesterday was the big hurdle.

Walsh, who had scores of Connemara people working in his campaign, had almost 20% of the vote – a percentage point ahead of Boston City Councillor John Connolly.

The result was announced some hours ago and Marty Walsh spoke at a celebratory party afterwards.

His fund raising gave an indication of strong support – $60,000 starting off and going up to $1.5m.

From now on the focus will be on the election on November 5th.
