Election 2020
Social Democrats and Greens hit the campaign trail in Galway City
The battle for votes on the Left ramped up a gear this week as the Social Democrats launched their campaign for a seat in Galway West.
The party’s candidate Niall Ó Tuathail set out his stall with funding for improved transport infrastructure, funding for the arts community and a transformed housing market all be high on his list of priorities.
Local musician Tracy Bruen kicked off the event at The Kitchen in Galway City Museum where Mr Ó Tuathail had gathered supporters from community groups including local advocates representing people with disabilities, the Galway School Cycle Bus group and the campaign against busking bylaws.
Around 40 people turned out to see the second-time candidate make his pitch for a seat by promising a better quality of life for people living in the constituency.
“Traffic is major issue in Galway. We are all spending too much time in traffic with our cars polluting the air,” he said.
Galway wasn’t a safe place to cycle and that must be tackled, he claimed. And the decision to build a bypass had now moved out of politicians’ hands and into the planning process – with a Bord Pleanála Oral Hearing due to commence on the planning application in just over a fortnight.
