Sleeping couple are attacked in their bed with boiling water
Galway Gardaí are understood to be pursuing a definite line of inquiry into an assault incident over the weekend in which a man and woman suffered burns after boiling water was poured over them in their bedroom.
The incident occurred at Cooke’s Terrace, Bohermore, in the early hours of Sunday morning when a man broke into a house and attacked the couple who were asleep inside.
Boiling water was poured over the two victims leading to both being hospitalised later that morning – the burns suffered by the man are understood to be serious.
The couple were initially treated at University Hospital Galway and the woman has since been released from hospital – however the man has been transferred to St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.
It is understood that the parties may have been known to each other with Gardaí investigating the possibility that the incident could have had a ‘domestic’ orientation.
The break-in occurred at around 3am with Gardaí called to the scene a short time later – in a follow-up operation they are understood to have arrested a man in his mid-30s in the Bohermore area about two hours later.
The man has been questioned by Gardaí under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act with charges expected to be brought in the case over the coming days.
