Six in running for football job

Six men have been nominated to fill the Galway senior football manager post, left vacant following the surprise resignation of Joe Kernan.

Football Board Chairman John Joe Holleran and Football Board Secretary, Seamus O’Grady last night refused to divulge the names, or indeed the number of candidates, nominated, but there is speculation former Dublin footballer and Dublin, Roscommon and Cavan manager Tommy Carr, who has Galway connections, is among the nominations.

Former Mayo midfielder and Barna manager Pat Fallon; current Galway minor manager Gerry Fahy; former Caltra and Clare manager Frank Doherty; and Caherlistrane manager and former All-Ireland winning selector under John O’Mahony, Pete Warren, are also thought to have been nominated. There is also speculation former Galway U21 manager Stephen Joyce has been put forward.

It is understood Liam Kearns, Alan Mulholland, Brian Talty and Mick O’Dwyer, all of whom had been linked to the position, have not been nominated.

The clubs’ deadline for nominations was 3pm yesterday. Holleran said he would have to inform the Board Executive of the nominations first before they were made public. This would be done at a Lotto meeting late last night or at a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday).

The full Football Board will meet next week to choose a panel of people who will interview the candidates. The Board has an option of adding its own nomination, but Holleran would not be drawn on whether it would be exercising this right.
