Galway City Tribune – The acquisition of a site in Galway to build a new courthouse is expected within months, according to the Chief Justice of Ireland.

Mr Justice Frank Clarke, who is chair of the Courts Service Board, said he was “reasonably hopeful” of making progress on plans for a new city courthouse.

In an interview with the Galway City Tribune, Mr Justice Clarke confirmed a new courthouse for Galway was a priority.

“It has taken a bit of time to get a site, and it’s not there yet, but I’m reasonably hopeful that we may have a site and will be able to put in place an acquisition within months rather than years.

“The position is, we are looking at three sites at the moment. I don’t think I can go further than to say that I would be reasonably hopeful that we may be able to make progress on one or other of those in the not too far distant future,” he said.

Mr Justice Clarke described the current courthouse at Courthouse Square as a “lovely building”, but it “can’t be made bigger”.
