SIPTU trade union is threatening industrial action may be taken if proposed changes to Galway fire services are not deferred.

New proposals which involve extending the city limit to a radius of 5 miles before the part time crew is called in are expected to be implemented from this Saturday.

The current radius is two and a half miles, when the retained part-time crew members are called to be on standby at the Claddagh based fire station.

City Councillor Padraig Conneely has raised the issue in the past claiming there are serious safety issues involved in the changes.

He now says he will question the councils allocation of 4.1 million euro the city fire services in 2013.

An emergency meeting between SIPTU and trade union members took place last evening.
