A group of SIPTU members are calling on the HSE to reconsider its plans for Toghermore House residential unit in Tuam.

All 16 residents at the facility are to be transferred to alternative accommodation on a phased basis by mid January.

It follow’s an independent Fire and Safety report at the 18 bed facility which was undertaken in September and delivered to the HSE last week.

It shows shortfalls in relation to fire safety that are to be addressed with immediate effect.

A group of workers and SIPTU members say the HSE should look at all options to retain the facility for the people of Tuam.

Paul Hardy of SIPTU trade union says its Toghermore members are not taking industrial action.

He told Galway Bay fm news that while the fire safety issues should be taken very seriously, renovation costs may be less than sourcing alternative care options for residents
