Sigh of relief for Ciarán as latest show ‘Breath’ finally comes home

Galway theatre director Ciarán Taylor is returning to his home city this Friday evening, January 28, with Breath – a Music Play.

The piece, which reflects on our lives over the past two years, features actor Karl Quinn and musician Steve Wickham of the Waterboys and will be staged at the Town Hall Theatre as an evening show, starting 6.30pm.

Ciarán has written the piece in collaboration with the performers and says “there’s something in it for everyone. We try, sensitively, to deal with the dark side of the past two years. But it looks at a lot of people’s experiences in a light-hearted way”.

Breath is about one man whose family are working and studying from home. That’s causing pressure – and then there’s the constant sanitising, the news overload and work Zooms. He’s trying to stay Zen with online yoga, home-baking, and dancing in the kitchen. But he’s always aware that a simple sneeze could blow his world apart.

This musical drama is a largely light-hearted piece which reminds us of the early lockdown days when it wasn’t uncommon for people to spray groceries with anti-viral mixes when we arrived home from the supermarket.

“Because we didn’t have the normal time points to hang our memories on, a lot of people talk about having a brain fog about things that happened during lockdown,” Ciarán observes. This show recalls those days, but in a fun way.

Ironically, plans to bring Breath on tour last year had to be shelved – because of the very topic it was addressing.

“We had started discussing the idea in 2020, thinking it would be over soon,” says Ciarán of the pandemic. “But it was last June before we started putting it together, still thinking things would be over in December.”
