Duffy does the job as Ireland hit jackpot in Hickstead

GALWAY show jumper Michael Duffy continued his impressive rise in the sport when helping Ireland to a superb, if nail-biting Nations Cup win over Britain at Hickstead last weekend.
With Ireland coming under pressure from their hosts, Duffy and his charge Top Contender showed their class when leaping a clear round to guarantee Ireland a jump-off, where Anthony Condon and his horse Aristio produced what has been described as ‘a daring gallop’ to secure Ireland victory.
“It is always a good battle between Ireland and Britain, either in Dublin or on the British soil of Hickstead. Historically, it is always a good battle anyway,” began 23-year-old Duffy when he spoke to Tribune Sport this week.
“I suppose, you could say with two four-fault rounds before my own (set), it was getting tight so the clear round sort of guaranteed us a jump-off and a fighting chance. Fair play to Anthony Condon as well. He had no easy task either.”
As Duffy recounted the events leading to their victory, which also guaranteed Ireland a place in the 2018 Nations Cup World Final in Barcelona in September, it was clear this meant a lot to the talented Turloughmore man.
“Yeah, it is brilliant. This has always been my thing. I have always been a team player. I suppose, Nations Cups and team events, I much prefer that to anything you can do individually. So, it is great, especially when Rodrigo (Pessoa, team manager) and all these guys give you a show of faith like that. It is nice to reward them back.”
