Shoes ‘designed’ by celebs is just a load of old cobblers

It may have sailed seamlessly under your radar, but there’s a relatively new range of footwear on the market – designed by a country singer who was previously one-fifth of a girl band.

And that’s fine – once you’re happy to pick your shoes on the basis of the designer’s ability to sing.

But being old-school about these things, I’d sooner wear shoes made by someone who knows about feet – just as I wouldn’t invest an awful lot of money in some cobbler’s latest CD.

Then again, David Beckham has ‘designed’ underwear and come up with the scent for a range of aftershave, just as the artist formerly known as Jordan seems to have an unlimited talent for bringing out new perfumes.

And there’s nothing new in all this; John Rocha – a supremely talented clothes designer – extended his expertise to crystal, which is as big a leap as having a glassblower launching a new range of summer dresses.

The reason all this happens, of course, is down to money; a pair of John Rocha Waterford Crystal flutes would set you back €130 – and they’re not made in Waterford either.

But this is a mutually beneficial proposition for all parties, and we will be gracious enough to acknowledge that the celebrity is at least consulted – or that sometimes they might even have opened their big box of crayons and drawn an idea for the expert to then run with.

In essence, the ‘designer’ gets paid to lend their name to a product even though they may know little or nothing about it, while the manufacturer rents the celebrity’s name to flog their goods.
