Devastation…Kate Moran.

SPORTING communities across Galway are in shock this week following the death of 20-year-old Athenry camogie player, Kate Moran, following an accident during a match on Monday evening last.

Kate had been playing with Athenry in a senior league match in Ardrahan against the home side when she collapsed after suffering an accidental injury to her head.

Emergency medical services, including a number of ambulances were at the scene shortly afterwards, before Kate Moran was rushed to University Hospital Galway on Monday evening – she passed away on Tuesday morning last.

A daughter of well-known Galway auctioneer, Cathal Moran and his wife Mary, Kate is also survived by her brother Thady and sisters Leah and Saoirse.

Local Monivea councillor, Albert Dolan, told the Connacht Tribune this week that the sporting fraternity and families across the county, had been rocked by the news of Kate Moran’s passing, describing her as a role model for her peers.

“I was a couple of years ahead of her at national school in Monivea before she went to secondary school in the Presentation, Athenry.

“Both academically, and on the field of play, she was one of those really talented people with a lovely personality as well. It’s a long time since I’ve seen so many people of all age groups in such a state of shock over what has happened,” said Cllr. Dolan.

He said that the heartfelt sympathy of everyone in the community went out to Kate’s parents, Cathal and Mary, and to her siblings, in what has been a shocking tragedy for them.
