SERIOUS FINANCIAL BLOW FOR COUNTY COUNCIL
Date Published: 21-Dec-2012
The finances of Galway County Council have been dealt a serious blow with news that over 8 million euro is still outstanding for works carried out on the Aran Islands.
The works worth around 4.4 million euro were carried out at Caladh Mor pier on Inis Meain while over 4.1 million euro worth of works took place at Kilronan harbour.
County Manager Martina Maloney told the County Council meeting last evening (thurs dec 20) that the Department of Gaeltacht is refusing to pay the money.
According to the County manager, the Government Department says its only obligation is to pay the original sum on the contracts
She added that such a situation is unprecedented as the council has never found itself in this situation before, and the work was carried out in good faith.
