Serious downturn in angling visitors

A poor salmon run and strict new conservation measures to protect stocks are being blamed for a major drop in the number of anglers coming to the West so far this season.
Former angling inspector with the Western Regional Fisheries Board, Danny Goldrick, now secretary of the Corofin Angling Association, said he is in contact with anglers throughout Galway and all have reported a downturn in anglers this year.
“There’s no doubt about it. There’s definitely a way less anglers than last year. You have a situation where less salmon can be taken, some fisheries are completely closed. Galway has such a low quota of fish that can be killed so all the anglers are flocking to the Moy.”
