Full capacity protocol is expected to become a regular feature at University Hospital Galway as staff attend to high numbers of emergency patients.

The protocol for dealing with overcrowding acts as an alert to the whole health health system in County Galway that there are significant numbers of patients awaiting admission to the hospital on trolleys.

It was activated by senior management at UHG casulaty last Monday week and is still in place. (16 April)

Chief Operating Officer of Galway Roscommon Hospital group Tony Kanavan says that the protocol is not ideal but it is an efficient working model.
