Senior Galway cleric is new Bishop of Achonry

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed, Monsignor Brendan Kelly, Vicar General of Galway Diocese and Parish Priest of An Spideál, as Bishop of Achonry.

The Vatican informed the Papal Nuncio in Dublin, Archbishop Dr. Lazzarotto two weeks ago of the news and he informed Monsignor Kelly prior to it being formally announced on Tuesday.

Monsignor Kelly — who was born in Derrybrian on May 20, 1946, Loughrea and reared in Craughwell, told the Connacht Tribune from his soon-to-be new diocese in Ballaghaderreen, that he was “surprised and overwhelmed” by the appointment.

“I have mixed emotions at the moment.

I never expected that this would happen in my lifetime but I’m grateful for the trust that has been placed in me,”
