A senior bank official in Galway has been arrested by Garda fraud squad detectives as part of a major ongoing investigation into mortgage fraud, the Galway City Tribune has learned.

The arrest came as part of a two-year nationwide investigation by detectives into the alleged falsification of mortgage application documentation.

A team of four detectives from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation (GBFI) in Dublin arrested the bank official in the city and he was questioned over the course of two days at Mill Street Garda Station.

The Galway City Tribune understands that the bank official was questioned about alleged offences under the Criminal Justice Fraud and Theft Act.

It’s believed that two other bank workers were questioned but not arrested as part of the investigation.

A spokesperson for Galway Gardaí confirmed an arrest had been made by the GBFI but “nobody was charged in Galway”.
