Seeing red over yellow
Date Published: 06-Jul-2007
An emergency motion will be tabled before Galway City Council calling for an immediate end to the resurfacing of the Promenade in Salthill with yellow coloured ecoflex.
The Council resurfaced the Grattan Road end of the Prom with the ecoflex material, a much cheaper alternative to concrete or tarmacadam.
Cllr. John Mulholland said by taking the cheap option the Council was destroying the city’s greatest asset. “We have to leave it as it was. The concrete footpath on the Prom has lasted a very long time. I’ve been told the foundations are crumbling and they can’t afford the price of concrete to repair it. How could they afford it when times were very hard? Why start with the cheap option now?” he asked.
“Ecoflex is not the same finished product as concrete, it doesn’t have the same kerbing, it’s not as user-friendly underfoot. Aesthetically it’s destroying the whole ethos of the Prom, which is the jewel in the crown of the city, our Champs Elysées. They didn’t put that stuff down Shop Street.”
