SARSFIELDS wrapped up a tremendous 2019 for the club on Saturday at Duggan Park with victory over Athenry in the Galway Minor A camogie championship final, a fifth successive county title at this level.

After an evenly contested first half which saw the teams level at the interval, few could have predicted a 12-point margin of victory for either side. However, Sarsfields completely took over in the second period, producing a performance of complete dominance which saw them run out comprehensive winners.

Athenry began well in the opening half, with Sabina Rabbitte opening the scoring with a pointed free. Shortly after, Sarsfields ‘keeper Abbie Curley made a good save from Olwen Rabbitte, before Niamh Keogh fired over a point from the rebound.

Another pointed free from Rabbitte saw Athenry open up a 0-3 to 0-0 lead. Sarsfields had made a slow start, but Cora Kenny got the ball rolling with her first pointed free. Subsequently, Rachel Murray made a great run through the Athenry defence before passing to Sheena Warde, who blasted a low shot to the net.

Athenry responded well, with two excellent points from Olwen and Sabina Rabbitte. The game began to really open up, with Rachel Murray swending over a great point for Sarsfields to equalise. Athenry soon went ahead again with a fine point from Eimear Tully. Sabina Rabbitte was having a big influence on proceedings during the first half, providing a very strong presence in midfield. Two points from Cora Kenny saw the lead switched back in favour of Sarsfields, before Olwen Rabbitte’s second point saw the sides go in level at the interval.

Sarsfields made the perfect start to the second half, when Sheena Warde made a strong run through the Athenry defence before flicking the ball past Laura Freeney for her second goal. The lively Ciara Griffin then fired over a point to extend their lead to four. Warde was proving a real handful after her switch to full forward, adding a fine point soon after.
