Second attempt to open Tuam crematorium fails

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A second attempt to open a crematorium in Tuam has failed.

An Bord Pleanála has refused to overturn a County Council planning decision to refuse permission for the crematorium.

The appeal was lodged by businessman, Tommy Varden for the site at Townparks.

County planners refused permission for a crematorium in Tuam last December, stating that it would be an overdevelopment of the site, partly due to lack of parking.

Tommy Varden appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála and in revised plans reduced the numbers who could attend ceremonies at the crematorium.

He also reduced the floor area of the building in Tuam town.

An Bord Pleanála has turned down the proposal on the basis that it would be a traffic hazard because access to the site would be off a narrow cul-de-sac.

The board also felt the Tuam crematorium would represent a “cramped form of development”.

Recently, separate plans for a 5-million euro crematorium at Garbally Demense in Ballinasloe were withdrawn from the local authority.
