Seat model that looks and handles like an estate but is equally capable off-road

Lifestyle cars are filling every niche in the marketplace these days and car makers are filling every void that they can find or create to attract more customers.

SEAT, the Volkswagen-owned brand is making some inroads with new models in the field of sports and activity vehicles for the young energetic driver who works hard during the week and plays hard at the weekend. Their latest creation is the SEAT Leon ST X-PERIENCE.

Here is a car that looks and functions like a regular estate but, with some design features that give it a bolder look and technology that means you can take it off-road when the need presents itself. For the outdoor adventurer you get 4-Weel Drive, which SEAT call 4Drive, and extra ground clearance making it suitable for driving on rough roads, fields and the harshest of weather conditions.

When driving normally, the clutch transmits most of the power to the front wheels. Off-road when traction is compromised, power is diverted to the rear wheels too in a matter of milliseconds. This happens so smoothly you will hardly notice it and full four-wheel drive gives you all the traction you need in the circumstances.

It is similar looking to the SEAT Leon ST, it is equipped with 587-litres of luggage space but has a more robust look with protection mouldings on the door sills and wheel arches in addition to aluminium touches for the rear bumper and lower front spoiler. Also included are integrated fog lamps and twin chrome tailpipes, together with substantial air intakes at the front.

There is a choice of three models, a 1.6 TDI 110hp two-wheel drive which is priced at €29,495, a 2.0-litre TDI 150bhp 4WD which costs €32,495 and the 2.0-litre TDI 184bhp 4WD DSG for €35,495.

I have been driving the top-of-range model and like most cars from the Volkswagen stable, it lacks for nothing in terms of power and steadiness on the open road too. Shod with 17” alloy wheels and fitted with rear park distance control, cruise control, 5” colour touch screen with USB/SD/Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, this car it well equipped. The 184bhp DSG model that I drove is also armed with SEAT Drive Profile, which provides the option of upgraded steering and throttle response.
