Speculation is mounting about the identity of the young couple who scooped more than half a million euro in last Friday night’s Euromillions draw.

The lucky ticket was purchased in O’Donohoe’s supermarket in Abbeyknockmoy sometime on Friday but the identity of the winners remains a mystery.

The couple collected their winnings from the National Lottery offices in Dublin on Monday afternoon where they celebrated their good fortune with champagne.

There is some speculation that the winners may be local but living in the Moylough area and are planning to get married sometime this year.

Luck was certainly on their side on Friday last when they stopped off in O’Donohoe’s supermarket and filling station in Abbeyknockmoy to purchase the €6 quick pick.

In fact it was the biggest winning ticket to be sold in the supermarket since the premises opened seven years ago.

Owner Eithne O’Donohoe told The Connacht Tribune that a few names had been mentioned but they still had no clue as to the identity of the winners.

“This is by far the biggest win we have ever had and it is very exciting. Hopefully the winners will put it to good use and that it will make their lives happier.

“The lottery people will not tell us when exactly the ticket was purchased because our CCTV cameras could probably pick out who it was.

“In the past we have sold tickets that resulted in people winning a €100 here and a €100 there but this is by far the biggest and hopefully it won’t be the last”, Eithne added.

She said that the Euromillions had become very popular in recent years because a lot of people felt that they had a better chance of winning something substantial.

The couple informed the lottery headquarters that they didn’t want to be identified. They said that they were watching the draw on television last Friday night when they realised they had won €548,000.

The winners said that they were delighted with their windfall and hope to use the money to get married and brighten up their families’ lives.

It continues Galway’s good track record in terms of lottery wins. The last big win was just last Christmas when a syndicate from Attymon, which included the local publican, his son and two neighbours, scooped over €2.6 million.
